TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language)

It tests the ability to use and understand English at university level.

There are 4 parts to the TOEFL exam.

Paper 1: Reading (25% of final grade)

Paper 2: Listening (25% of final grade)

Paper 3: Speaking (25% of final grade)

Paper 4: Writing (25% of final grade)

Each paper is scored out of 30.

The total maximum score is 120

There are 3 or 4 texts.

Each text has 10 questions.

Students are tested on their ability to understand and interpret academic texts.

They need identify main ideas, details, key vocabulary, the purpose of the text and the general meaning.

The reading exam lasts 54 to 72 minutes.

There are 3 or 4 lectures, each with 6 questions.

There are 2 or 3 conversations, each with 5 questions.

Students are tested on their ability to understand spoken English.

They need to identify main ideas, details, key vocabulary, the opinion of the speakers and how the information has been organised.

The listening exam lasts 41 to 57 minutes.

There are 4 tasks.

There is one independent task. Students express an opinion on a topic.

There are 3 integrated tasks. Students need to read, listen and then speak in response to a questions.

Students are tested on their ability to speak clearly and coherently in English.

They need to be able to express their opinions, and to give examples to support these.

They also need to be able to summarise information from listening and reading material.

The speaking exam lasts 17 minutes.

There are 2 tasks.

One task is an integrated task. Students read a text, listen to a recording, then write a response.

One task is an independent tasks. Students write an essay based on personal experience or their opinions.

Students are tested on their ability to write clearly and coherently in English.

They need to be able to organise, develop and support ideas.

They also need to use appropriate vocabulary and grammar.

The writing exam lasts 50 minutes.
