PET (Preliminary English Test) – B1

PET tests ability to use English in everyday situations.

There are 3 papers.

Paper 1: Reading and Writing

Paper 2: Listening

Paper 3: Speaking

Paper 1: Reading and Writing 📖 ✍️

The reading and writing paper is divided into 2 sections, with 8 parts.

Reading

Part 1: Read 5 short texts. For example, a sign or a message. Answer multiple-choice questions.

Part 2: Read 5 descriptions of people. Match with 8 short texts.

Part 3: Read a longer text, then answer 7 True/False questions.

Part 4: Read a longer text, then answer 5 multiple-choice questions.

Part 5: Read a text with 10 gaps, then fill in the gaps with multiple-choice options.

Writing

Part 6: Write one or 2 short messages, based on information given. Write about 35 to 45 words.

Part 7: Write a longer text, based on information given. Write 100 words.

Part 8: Write a longer text. For example, an email, an article or a story. Write 100 words.

The Reading and Writing test lasts 90 minutes.

Paper 2: Listening 🔊

The Listening paper has 4 parts.

Part 1: Listen to 7 short conversations or monologues. Answer multiple-choice questions.

Part 2: Listen to a longer conversation or monologue. Answer multiple-choice questions.

Part 3: Listen to a longer conversation or monologue. Answer gap fill questions.

Part 4: Listen to a longer conversation or monologue. Answer multiple matching questions.

The listening test lasts 30 minutes (and 8 minutes for transferring answers).

Paper 3: Speaking 💬

The speaking paper has 4 parts.

There are 2 or 3 students in each group and 2 examiners.

Part 1: The examiner will ask you questions about yourself.

Part 2: Individual Long Turn. Each student speaks for about one minute, based on a visual prompt.

Part 3: Collaborative task, with one or 2 other students and 2 examiners. Discuss and make decisions, based on visual prompts.

Part 4: Group Discussion.. Students talk about topics related to the Collaborative Task.

The Speaking test lasts 12 to 17 minutes (for each pair of students).
