German (GCSE – General Certificate of Education)

There are 4 parts to the German GCE exam.
Paper 1: Speaking (25% of final grade)
Paper 2: Listening (25% of final grade)
Paper 3: Reading (25% of final grade)
Paper 4: Writing (25% of final grade)
Paper 1: Speaking
Students are tested on their ability to communicate and interact in German.
There are 3 main tasks.
Task 1: Reading aloud
Task 2: A role play
Task 3: A picture-based task with conversation.
(The Speaking exam lasts 7 to 9 minutes for the Foundation Tier.)
(The Speaking exam lasts 10 to 12 minutes for the Higher Tier.)
Paper 2: Listening
Students are tested on their understanding of spoken German, and their ability to put spoken German into written German.
(Foundation Tier assessment lasts 45 minutes; Higher Tier assessment lasts 60 minutes.)
Paper 3: Reading
Students are tested on their understanding of written German for different text types, such as literary texts, adverts, letters, articles and emails.
(Foundation Tier assessment lasts 45 minutes; Higher Tier assessment lasts 60 minutes.)
Paper 4: Writing
Students are tested on their writing skills for sharing ideas, facts and opinions.
(Foundation Tier assessment lasts 70 minutes; Higher Tier assessment lasts 80 minutes.)
